I fished the Gunnison River at the East Portal which is below Crystal dam on Saturday, November 1st. I only got to fish for a couple of hours after my football game but is was a lot of fun. It was so warm it felt like it was still summer time and not November! I think I probably hooked about 5 or 6 fish total. I was nymph fishing with a beadhead nymph and an egg pattern. Since I did not have much time to fish I just walked the bank and tried to sight nymph to fish I could see. Polarized sunglasses make it possible to see fish so you can sight fish to them. Even though most of leaves are gone from the bushes and trees in the canyon it is still so beautiful and so are the fish.
This stretch of the Gunnison River is Gold Medal water and has regulations that only allow you to fish with flies or lures. All rainbow trout must be released immediately.
This is a neat place to go fishing even if you do not catch any fish.
This one of the spots that I was able to sight nymph to a couple of fish.
I think the East Portal rainbows are some of the most colorful rainbows I have caught.
Check out the amazing colors on this rainbow!
It is nice to take pictures of nice fish like this. Just remember to take the picture quickly and do not keep the fish out of the water for too long. Handle them carefully and release them back so we can enjoy catching them again another day.
