When fly fishing in lakes and ponds it is important to keep all the slack line out of your fly line and leader while retrieving your fly. This is so important because if there is slack line you may not feel the fish take the fly and you will not know to set the hook. A good technique to use is to keep your rod tip in the water while stripping the fly back in after the cast. This also gives you good control of the retrieve speed of your fly. If you hold your rod tip up in the air during the retrieve there is slack line from the surface of the water to the tip of the rod. This makes it difficult to control the retrieve and also to feel gentle takes from the fish. The picture below show a good rod position when stripping your fly back in to keep slack line out of the system. Try this out and let me know if you start hooking more fish! Remember, have fun!
